Game Crash After Receiving Quest Reward / Crash Après Récompense
#1
Posté 01 février 2013 - 23:35
Every time I come back to play Daggerfall, the same problem occurs. That is when I'm doing quests, it comes to a point where when I finish the quest and go to click the reward and click exit the game freezes. It doesn't crash, but to close it I have to alt-tab and close it manually.
My problem is exactly the same as this guy : http://forums.uesp.n...php?f=2&t=34324 ; http://forums.uesp.n...php?f=2&t=26747
I've been speaking to Ancestral Ghost and trying to narrow down as to what causes this bug.
+Also on a note, tried to skip quests with rewards but after around 170 days of travel the game freezes anyways.
EDIT Ancestral Ghost :
This post is on the crash crash which occur when you receive a reward from quest. This bug seem come from one DaggerfallSetup optional content. We want find it and fix it.
We need all possible informations from as many players as possible for investigate :
- Were Unofficial contents installed ? And which ones ?
- What was the first freezed quest for you ? (Full quests list)
- What was the ingame date of the crash ?
- What was the Reward ?
- What did you do before start this quest ?
- What did you do during this quest ?
- Any other useful information.
Vous pouvez répondre en anglais ou français.

This bug come from one DaggerfallSetup optional content, but Which one ?
Following mage's guild quest aren't changed by DaggerfallSetup contents :
- Open a Chest
- Protect an honored Mage
- A Dangerous Wizard
"The Impostor" quest is only changed in DFQFIX since the December 2012 version, ... but the bug is older.
The bug don't seem come from a secondary quest.
Maybe it is from :
- The Main Quest and Brisienna meeting ?
- A spell ?
- The reward object ?
- A Fall.exe related content ?

For me this bug seems to occur after I join the Thieves' Guild. Then I can get one or two quests in - Thieves' Guild or Noble and then it'll crash or else just hang up making funny noises. It's crashed on Thieves: Hot Stone, Arms Supply.
And Noble Quest: The Thieves Gang.
On two occasions it has crashed shortly after I am done with the quests and going about my business.
These were: Thieves': Drugs Delivery and Thieves': Hot Stone. In one case it crashed when I tried to enter an inn or
fast travel (after reloading after the inn crash). In the other case (Drugs Delivery), I managed to fast travel to another
town, sell some items and then it crashed when I tried to fast travel again.
Another crash/hang that happens to me is when I ask for "Any News?". That happened from early on in my game
so I just quit asking that question.
I then tried reloading a much earlier savegame. I then joined the Thieves' Guild and
the same thing happened even though I had previously completed several quests from that save game point safely.
I've tried it with cheatmode 1 and cheatmode 0.
Note: My game has one other "bug" which I don't mind but which may matter. I am not a werewolf or a vampire, but my Running
skill is 121 and still rising. I wonder if the game might get confused by that.
Another thing is that I had used the tes2 tool to fix a previous buggy quest (Exorcism). But that was a LONG time before my crashes. And I did use FIXSAVE a couple of times.
Thanks for your efforts! I really appreciate having the game in DOSBOX-ready form. I hope that you can find the bug.
I'll let you know if I learn anything more. I plan to try going back to my earlier savegame and avoiding the
Thieves' Guild altogether to see if that helps. I'm suspicious that the Thieves' Guild Acceptance Quest is somehow polluting my game.
Followup - My problems are occurring now when I'm Level 23 (or for my restored older savegame Level 22).
I would be very surprised if this was a problem with the Lady Brisienna quest alone. Also I'm Level 6 in the Mages Guild
so I did a lot of Mage's Guild quests safely before this problem occurred.
Also I tried going to different provinces to do my quests after joining the Thieves Guild.
Join Guild in Dragontail Mtns. Crashy Quests in: Kozonset or in Sentinel
For restarted early game: Join Guild in Wayrest, Quests in Savaudon
Thanks again.

These were the EXACT the circumstances when this freeze occured. I was a new member of the thieves guild, and it was one of these two quests which the game began to freeze, then started freezing for quests from other guilds (Etc. fighter's) before it started to freeze after fast-travelling. It's been a while since this bug occured to me, so I don't remember a lot, but this I certainly do. I believe I was able to discover that only certain quests were effected, or not. Or that it didn't matter if it was an original quest or a COMPusa edition one (or it did.) I don't remember too much.
What I ended up doing was uninstall and re-install, and the bug was gone. There is a way to save all of your character's information and put it back in with a new game, losing only your gold in bank, marked map locations, and guild memberships and ranks (you might be able to save that even.) Just record all character information from the in-game character screen and inventory, use save game editors such as Daghex2f.zip and the DAGEDIT that comes with AncestralGhost's version.

Merci.
For Everyone : What was the ingame date of the crash ?

I got the same bug, I got it when i was going to complete the quest that you stop 2 lovers from being together.
The reward was cash only and as every1 else my game freezed when i pressed exit. Now the thing is i let the freeze wait out and the cmd thing told me that it was error 112.
I got redirected here from UESP and some1 denied that he got an error message coz he probaly didnt wait it out.

I also experienced the same quest bug a month ago or so, using version 2.7 of DaggerfallSetup. I tried running without the unofficial patches as well as with them, but neither setting worked to solve the issue. I could always replicate the bug on completion of the 5th quest (could be any quest apparently). I noticed that there was a new release (2.7a) but as far as I know no changes were made to the unofficial patches (which are believed to be the source of the problem) or any of the other game files.
I experimented again, using different installation settings on this new release and found that the game would crash on any setting if I canceled the tutorial at the beginning of the game. I never knew this was possible (I always clicked yes on the prompt). Then I decided to mess with the compatibility settings on the shortcut to Daggerfall (I'm running under Windows 8, but there are reports that the bug also happens under Windows 7). As it turns out, setting the shortcut to compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3 solved the crash at the tutorial prompt. Moreover, I have already completed over 5 quests and the game has yet to crash on accepting a quest reward.
Right now I'm running the game flawlessly with all the unofficial bug fixes installed. Maybe downloading the latest release and changing the compatibility settings will work for you too. The only issue is that doing so changes the path the game uses to look for your saves (or at least it makes saves made under other compatibility settings disappear from the load/save menu). I don't know if the bug is embeded in saves, so maybe starting from the beginning is your only option.
If this work, or not, for you, please say it here.

I've been keeping tabs every now and then to what kind of progress has been made to finding a solution and noticed this last post. All I can say is that I have not changed anything since the last time I posted here. I did try to do the run in Windows XP service pack 3 compatibility mode and what happens to me is that my saves get deleted but if I were to click on a save, it states "You drop to the ground, completely exhausted. You wake up an hour later" and then the game fails to load. I do not know if this happens with anyone else. I'm thinking of reinstalling Daggerfall and trying with the compatibility mode when I get my new PC in a week.

The game looks like its been installed at a few locations
C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks - this is where the program files are located
C:\Users\Wild Gremlin\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks - this is where my saved games are located
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Bethesda Softworks - this is where a bunch of extras are
DosBox is here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Daggerfall
So basically install it anywhere but program files?

You can try to use Fixsave. If it not work, you can try start a new game.
Daggerfall is a very buggy game, save frequently and not always on the same slot.
